Reader
Tap any chapter to open it in the Reader. Tap the center of the screen at any time to show or hide the controls.
Reading modes
Two modes, switchable in Theme & Settings → Direction:
- Paginated (horizontal): pages turn like a book.
- Swipe: drag pages left/right
- Tap: tap the left/right edges
- Scroll (vertical): continuous scroll. The next chapter auto-loads when you reach the end of the current one.
The page counter at the top right tracks your position in either mode (e.g., “3 / 142”).
Controls
When the controls are visible (tap the center to toggle):
| Position | Control |
|---|---|
| Top left | Back |
| Top right | Chapter counter |
| Bottom left | Progress bar |
| Bottom right | Menu |
The menu contains:
- Previous / Next chapter
- Go to chapter (picker)
- Bookmarks: list of saved positions
- Theme & Settings: fonts, themes, customization
- Search in chapter: find within the current chapter
Themes
Six built-in reader themes: White / Sepia / Gray / Slate / Dark / Black.
The active theme controls the page background, text color, and accent. Change it in Theme & Settings → Theme.
Custom themes
Tap + Custom in the theme picker to build your own, pick background, text, and accent colors. Saved themes appear alongside the built-ins and can be edited or deleted later.
Sharing themes
Tap Share on a custom theme to export it as a .glyphtheme file. Anyone can import it by opening the file in Glyph, that lets people share reading themes the same way they share music playlists.
Fonts & typography
Five fonts out of the box: System, Georgia, Palatino, Charter, Times New Roman.
In Theme & Settings you can also adjust:
- Font size
- Bold toggle
- Line spacing, letter spacing, word spacing
- Text alignment, Left, Center, Justified
- Horizontal padding (margins)
Brightness & screen behavior
- Brightness slider at the top of Theme & Settings, independent of your system brightness, so you can dim the Reader without affecting the rest of iOS.
- Keep screen on: prevents auto-lock while reading. Useful for long sessions.
Pre-fetch
In Settings → Reader → Pre-fetch, choose how many upcoming chapters Glyph loads in the background (0 to 5). Higher values mean smoother continuous-scroll reading but more network use. Default is 1.
Bookmarks
Mark a position so you can return to it later, useful for a favorite passage, a tricky scene, or just a placeholder.
- Add a bookmark: menu → Add Bookmark. A small accent indicator appears on the left edge of the page.
- Add a note: tap an existing bookmark in the list to add or edit a note.
- Jump to a bookmark: menu → Bookmarks → tap any entry.
- Delete a bookmark: swipe left on the entry.
Bookmarks sync across devices via iCloud.
Search in chapter
Find any phrase in the current chapter:
- Menu → Search in Chapter
- Type your query, matches highlight as you type
- Use the arrows at the bottom to jump between matches
- The counter shows your position (e.g., “3 / 15”)
Matches are highlighted with the reader theme’s accent color.
